Research topic

Bioavailability and biological activity of dietary compounds/patterns and their role on human health

Project Synopsis

The main goal of this project is to elaborate, develop and validate a plant-based dietary pattern consistent with the Italian tradition and able to promote human health while having low impact on planet health. The role of such dietary pattern on nutritional status and the modulation of important metabolic and functional activities will be investigated in the target groups of the population. In this regard, within the plant-based dietary intervention study, the bioavailability of micronutrients and bioactive compounds will be assessed in order to identify critical nutrients in the context of sustainable diets and to promote the development of new and/or improved food products. This research could contribute to identify strategies aiming to avoid nutritional inadequacy, ameliorate nutrient bioavailability and increase the feasibility of the plant-based dietary pattern taking full advantage of digital technology to assess and facilitate adoption of healthy and sustainable patterns.
