These compounds are suspected carcinogens and considered toxic to humans, for this reason it is very important to achieve methods to reclaim contaminated sites. An important approach to reach this goal is bioremediation, a developing process that uses microorganisms to reclaim contaminated zones. The aim of the project is to analyse the bacterial population in a site contaminated by different compounds and subjected to different biostimulation treatments. In particular, bacterial populations involved in the degradation of chloroethenes and aromatic compounds are investigated by environmental genomics and by cultivation techniques.

Project keywords

Bioremediation, environmental microbiology, chloride aliphatic hydrocarbons

Contacts

DEFENS- Department of Food, Environmental and Nutritional Sciences

Università degli Studi di Milano

Via Mangiagalli, 25, Milano (MI), 20133

Phone: +39 02 50319147

email: martina.bertolini@unimi.it, martina.bertolini6@gmail.com

Collaborations

Giovanni Buscone, Tauw Italia

Laura Ferrari, Tauw Italia

Giovanni Beretta, Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra, UNIMI

Sponsor

Fellowship sponsor: Università degli Studi di Milano

Project sponsor: Tauw Italia

Others

Master Degree in Plant, Food and Environmental Biotechnology (2017)

Bachelor Degree in Plant, Food and Environmental Biotechnology (2015)

PhD Student: Martina Bertolini Tutor: Lucia Cavalca, DeFens Dean: Prof. Francesco Bonomi Research area: Agri-Environment Research topic Agrotechnological applications to shape microbial diversity for soil fertility and bioremediation Project Synopsis Chlorinated aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons are important contaminants all over the world because they are very common in different industrial activities.
