The Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is the most prestigious legal competition among Universities from all over the world, with the highest number of challenger teams in its final phase (almost 400 ones from as many Universities). The competition consists in a simulated arbitration proceedings, where each University team pleads during oral hearings before Arbitral Tribunals composed by the most eminent arbitrators (academics, professionals, judges) worldwide.
Here you can find all the information about the annual participation of University of Milan’s students (“Statale Moot Teams”) in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, the most prestigious international legal competition in the field of international commercial law and international commercial arbitration, which involves every around 400 Universities from all around the world.
The competition starts every year at the beginning of October with the online publication of a legal problem – identical for all the participating teams – concerning an international sales contract governed by the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), as well as issues of international civil procedure and international commercial arbitration. It is divided into two phases:
a) the written phase, aimed at drafting two memoranda, both for the Claimant and the Respondent;
b) an oral phase which takes place the week preceding Easter, in Vienna, and involves more than 4000 students from all over the world, which will be pleading against each other in oral hearings before an arbitral tribunal composed by real arbitrators. The week in Vienna is not limited to oral hearings, as it gives students the chance ot participate in an exciting program of conferences, seminars, workshops and social events.
The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot helps students to develop valuable and highly appreciated skills in international professional context, such as knowledge of legal English, techniques of both written and oral advocacy, as well as in-depth expertise of subject matter of strategic relevance in transnational dispute settlement. Being part of a team challenges students to cohordinate and work in group, developing team building skills as well.
