The Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot – Vienna

The Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is the most prestigious legal competition among Universities from all over the world, with the highest number of challenger teams in its final phase (almost 400 ones from as many Universities). The competition consists in a simulated arbitration proceedings, where each University team pleads during oral hearings before Arbitral Tribunals composed by the most eminent arbitrators (academics, professionals, judges) worldwide.
The competition starts every year at the beginning of October with the publication, online, of a legal problem (the same for all the participating teams and concerning an international sales contract governed by the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods – CISG, as well as issues of international civil procedure and international commercial arbitration) and provides for the drafting, within the first week of December, of a written Memorandum for Claimant and, within the end of January, of a written Memorandum for Respondent. Both memoranda shall be written in English. The oral hearings (also held in English), where each team shall plead both for the Claimant and for the Respondent, before Arbitration Tribunals composed by real arbitrators, take place in Vienna, during the week before Easter, where converge more than 4000 people (students, coaches, academics, professionals, judges, officers) from all around the world.
In preparation of the final stage in Vienna, each year, in the period February – March, several pre-moots are organized by different Universities and Institutions all around the world, where a limited number of teams meet to train in view of the final stage in Vienna.
The week in Vienna, in addition to the oral hearings, offers an exciting program of conferences, seminars, workshops and social events.
Participation in the competition gives the students the possibility to develop a series of valuable and highly appreciated skills in international professional contexts (knowledge of legal English; techniques of written and oral legal advocacy; in-depth expertise of subject-matters of strategic relevance in transnational dispute settlement; use of paper and electronic legal resources; ability to work in a team).

The Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court – (F.I.A.M.) Francoforte

The Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court consists of a simulated arbitration procedure, entirely in English, which involves dozens of Universities worldwide, in the field of International Investment Law and International Investment Arbitration (“Foreign Direct Investment or FDI”). This sector represents one of the most significant economic and legal phenomena of the last decades, including significant transactions in the corporate, energy, telecommunications, procurement, transport and similar fields. It essentially concerns investment contracts and related disputes between, on the one hand, States and public entities and, on the other, private investors (natural or legal persons). Although the means of resolving disputes in the investment sector may be the most varied (state court proceedings, mediation, diplomatic protection), arbitration is by far the most widely used mechanism.
The competition officially begins each year in November, with the publication of a “Case-Study”, the same for all teams, and is divided into two phases: a) a written phase, with the preparation of skeleton arguments, in English, both for the Claimant and for the Respondent, which must be sent to the organization within the following month of February; b) an oral phase, which takes place over a few days in Frankfurt, at the beginning of March, in which the participating teams will have to defend the positions of both the Claimant and the Respondent, before tribunals composed of eminent sector specialists.

PAX Moot – Inter-University Moot Competition in Private International Law – Sciences Po – Parigi/L’Aja

The PAX Moot – Inter-University Moot Competition in Private International Law is a moot court competition between teams of students from Universities around the world, that focuses on transnational civil and commercial litigation and on issues of private and procedural international law. Transnational civil and commercial litigation presents significantly greater complexities than domestic litigation, due to the differences in the legal traditions, political systems, social and cultural values ​​of the various jurisdictions involved. As part of the Pax Moot, the participating teams will learn the principles, rules and techniques of this particular legal sector, with a particular focus on the problems of identifying the competent courts and the applicable law, as well as of the recognition and enforcement of foreign decisions.
The competition is organized by Science Po University of Paris, in cooperation with the partners in the JUDGTRUST project, funded by the European Commission. This project is coordinated by the T.M.C. Asser Instituut, research institute for International Law, European Law, and Private International Law. The competition officially begins every year, in November, with the publication of “The Case”, the same for all teams, and is divided into two phases: a) a written phase, aimed at the drafting of two memorials in English, both for the Claimant and for the Respondent, which must be sent to the organization within the following month of April; b) an oral phase, which takes place over a few days in May (between Belgium and The Netherlands), in which the participating teams will be involved in oral hearings before courts composed by distinguished and eminent experts of the field, where they will defend the positions of both the Claimant and the Respondent.
