Associate professor of Physical Chemistry at DC UNIMI

Expertise:  spectroscopy, in particular Electron Spin Resonance

Cesare Oliva obtains his degree in Physics (1969) with a thesis in Physical Chemistry.  He is Charged Assistant (1971), Full Assistant (1977), Charged Professor (1977) and Associate Professor (1985) of Physical Chemistry at the “Università degli Studi di Milano, now by the “Dipartimento di Chimica”.

Presently, he is the teacher in charge of “Laboratory of Physical Chemistry” (Degree in Chemistry) and of “Physical Chemistry B” (Master Degree in Chemistry).

He is tutor or co-tutor of many master Theses in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Physics and Biology and one PhD Theses in Chemical Sciences. Since 1985 he is afferent to the CNR “Centre for Investigation on the Structure-Chemical Reactivity Relationships” (CSRSRC) of Milan, now “Institute of Molecular Sciences and Technologies” (ISTM), to which he contributes as Associate in the framework of the project: “Theoretical and Experimental Modelling of Molecular and Nano-structured Systems”. His research interests are in the field of materials characterization, in particular  by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) applied to oxidic catalysts and photocatalysts, involved in reactions of environmental importance, like flameless methane combustion, or photodegradation of air pollutants. Some of these investigations are carried on in collaboration with other Italian Universities as well as with foreign Institutions: among the last, the ETH (Zurich) and the D.I.Mendeleev University of Chemical Technologies of Russia (Moscow). Indeed, since 1989, C.O. is the scientific responsible of the collaboration with this Russian institution on the “Investigations on new catalysts to reduce or eliminate polluting gaseous releases”. In this frame, ca. 30 scientific papers have been published in prestigious international Journals.

Since January 2012, as a member of a Research Unity of INSTM (Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per la Scienza e Tecnologia dei Materiali), C.O. is the scientific responsible of a research contract with Cummins Inc. (Columbus, U.S.A.) on the theme:”EPR investigation on Cu-based catalysts for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx”.

C.O. has been invited by the Ivanovo State University of Chemistry and Technology (Ivanovo, Russia) to take part to the Round Table “Russia-Italy. Chemical Technologies: Perspectives of Development” (4th-7th June 2012).

The scientific activity of C.O. is documented by 121 publications on scientific Journals, among which 5 reviews or book chapters, by 59 communications to international meetings and by 44 communications to national meetings.  He is also the author of an universitary student book of Physical Chemistry. He takes part in the Organizing Committee of the 6th National Conference of the Italian Group of Electron Spin Resonance (GIRSE) (Urbino-Sogesta, 2011), of the National School on Electron Spin Resonance (Science Campus – Urbino, 2003) as a member of the Board of GIRSE and of the 39° Congresso Nazionale di Chimica Fisica (S.C.I., Stresa, 2010)
