On 23 November 2017, at a ceremony to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Spain’s accession to the Council of Europe, the Spanish Minister of Justice, Mr. Rafael Catalá Polo, the Jurisconsult of the European Court of Human Rights, Mr. Lawrence Early and the Dean of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), Mr. Alejandro Tiana Ferrer signed an agreement aimed at further increasing the number of Spanish translations of the Court’s case-law and publications in cooperation with the said University.
Mrs. Işıl Karakaş, Judge in respect of Turkey at the Court, Mr Luis Javier Gil Catalina, Permanent Representative of Spain to the Council of Europe, and Mr. Rafael León Cavero, Agent of the Spanish Government before the Court, also attended the ceremony.
The HUDOC database now contains 23,500 case-law translations in 31 languages other than English and French. Some 1,150 texts are in Spanish. A language-specific filter allows for rapid searching in HUDOC, including in free text. The Spanish user interface joins the existing English, French, Russian and Turkish versions, with Georgian, Bulgarian and Ukrainian interfaces to follow.
The Spanish Ministry of Justice is also translating a selection of the Court’s factsheets. These and other materials are available here. In addition, videos in Spanish are available on the Court’s YouTube channel. Publication and translation updates in Spanish are available via the Court’s multilingual Twitter account: https://twitter.com/ECHRPublication
