Epistemic and Normative Principles for Trustworthy AI

This call is for one full-time Postdoc Position for 1 year, renewable for 1 year. The Postdoc fellow will conduct research with Viola Schiaffonati and Daniele Chiffi in the context of BRIO ( This project is funded by the Italian Ministry of Research. BRIO aims at investigating means to avoid bias, mitigating risk, and overcoming opacity for the design, verification and development of Trustworthy AI (TAI).

We are interested in candidates who wish to investigate TAI from an epistemological and normative perspective, and to individuate the epistemic and normative principles at the basis of the notion of trust.

Research questions include, but are not limited to:

– What are the determinants of trust and their relationship with risk and uncertainty as ways to increase trust in AI?

– How is it possible to deal with the identification and mitigation of risk and uncertainty as ways to design and develop TAI?

– How can challenges in reproducibility and comparison of AI impact on trust?

The Postdoc will investigate the current literature on trust, risk, and uncertainty to analyze how these concepts have been discussed and elaborated in the context of AI. The Postdoc will elaborate new ideas on how to deal with these problems from a philosophical point of view and how to integrate this conceptual analysis with the activities carried out as part of BRIO.

The position will start on October 2022. Gross salary is €29.000 and coverage by the national healthcare service is included. The position does not involve teaching duties. However, teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and master level is possible and encouraged and it will entitle to additional compensation. Applicants should have a solid methodological background and a track-record of publications in primary international journals. Knowledge of the Italian language is not required, but the ability to teach in English is mandatory. Applicants should have already obtained a PhD degree in philosophy of science and/or technology, ethics, or a related area by the time of the application.
