Welcome to the website of the PhD Program in Earth Sciences at the Department of Earth Sciences “Ardito Desio” of the University of Milan, one of Italy’s five Departments of Excellence in Earth Sciences.
This site integrates the official page, that you can find here.
Presentation
The PhD program in Earth Sciences aims at training researchers in a wide variety of disciplines of the geosciences. In particular, it aims at providing advanced and specialized training in:
- basic, applied and theoretical research on topics inherent to the structure, composition, evolution, and modeling of the Earth System;
- basic and applied research on land management, natural hazards, energy and water resources, geomaterials, mineral prospecting, and the management of the cultural heritage.
The research themes of the PhD program in Earth Sciences are highly diverse, including Structural Geology, Tectonics, Solid Earth Geophysics, Numerical Modeling, Applied Geophysics, Mineralogy, Experimental Petrology, Applied Mineralogy and Petrography, Mining Geology, Integrated Stratigraphy and Chronostratigraphy, Sedimentary and Environmental Geology, Soil System Sciences, Geomorphology, Glaciology, Geochemistry, Paleoclimatology, Paleoecology, Paleoceanography, Paleogeography, Engineering Geology, Rock Mechanics, Hydrology and Hydrogeology.
The PhD program (3 years) includes also the attendance of short courses, schools, and seminars, as well as courses dedicated to the acquisition of soft skills, which are organized by the central university doctoral office. Students must develop a research project leading to a thesis that will be defended at the end of the PhD program. The training is monitored by the advisor, who provides guidance throughout every phase of the PhD research project.
