Research topic:
Plant genetic improvement for resistance to bacterial infections
Project Synopsis
In this project proposal, we will focus on the development of resistant varieties of Borlotto beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) to common bacterial blight (CBB). CBB is an endemic disease in almost all the regions where common bean is cultivated and it can cause severe yield reduction. We will use a combination of traditional and molecular marker assisted breeding to reach our goal. In addition, we plan to use the TILLING method for the identification of mutations in candidate genes potentially involved in the genetic resistance to CBB. The proposed project is a step forward for the generation of new genetic resources reducing the impact of CBB. Our research strategy will advance knowledge about the molecular mechanisms involved in the resistance to CBB and to other bacterial diseases.
