Protective role of polyphenol-rich diet in subjects with dysfunctional intestinal barrier and evaluation of dietary bioactives main mechanisms of action
Project Synopsis
My PhD project will focus on a dietary intervention study in a group of older people with dysfunctional intestinal barrier living in a controlled setting. The aim is to develop and demonstrate that a polyphenol-rich diet can exert benefits in this target population by reducing intestinal permeability and the inflammatory processes generally associated. This protective effect may be mediated by an improvement of gut microbiota composition; in addition, a direct and indirect (through derived metabolites) effect of polyphenols at the intestinal and systemic level is not excluded. In this context, markers of oxidative stress including DNA damage, endothelial function and other variables related with health and well-being will be investigated. Moreover, it is expected that the regular intake of the polyphenol-rich diet will induce a favourable metabolic and functional phenotype in the elderly.
