Sustainable tools to control emerging pests in frutticulture and horticulture, and postharvest technologies
Project Synopsis
The invasive Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) native to southeast Asia was reported for the first time from Europe Continent in Italy in 2008, and simultaneously from Northern America. This pest causes serious damage to soft and stone fruits worldwide. Since the larvae of D. suzukii feed inside ripening and ripe fruits, control strategies as alternatives to the use of chemicals need to be found. As different natural enemies coexist in the same areas of the pest, the aim of the present research is to deepen the knowledge on one of the parasitoids which have been found effective against D. suzukii in Lombardy Region-Italy. During field works, six different parasitoids have been captured, and the attention was focused on a pupal parasitoid Trichopria drosophilae (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae). Laboratory tests at different environmental conditions were made to evaluate the performances of T. drosophilae as potential candidate for mass rearing and augmentation biological control in the field.
