Research topic
Investigation of food and probiotic impact on oral, intestinal and vaginal microbiota, and study of the molecular mechanisms underlying host-probiotic interaction
Project Synopsis
This Ph.D. thesis research project aims to study the ability of probiotics and dietary intervention to modulate the intestinal microbial ecosystem (IME) of healthy people. To this aim, three different intervention studies are performed on diverse healthy populations: non-diseased/”normal” subjects, dyslipidemic young people, and irritable bowel syndrome subjects. Fecal samples are used to investigate IME through the assessment of (i) the overall structure of microbial communities by 16S rRNA gene profiling; (ii) the predicted metabolic potentian; (iii) the levels of short chain fatty acids produced by gut microorganisms.
