Research topic
Contribution of environmental, food and gut microorganisms to heavy metal recovery and sequestration.
Project Synopsis
The project is aimed at exploiting microbial biosorption for removing heavy metals from contaminated environments. In particular, the recovery of heavy metals will be studied in extracellular polymeric substances producing bacteria: this is an eco-friendly biotechnology that converts a waste product into a valuable one, because the metal-organic complexes can be exploited as biocatalysts or as high commercial value salts. This process has a lower water footprint and fits in the concept of circular economy.
