Research topic
Sustainability in food chain: integrated approaches to reduce food loss and food waste.
Project Synopsis
The global food and beverage market is highly competitive, demanding innovative packaging solutions. Among them, polyolefinic materials are commonly employed in flexible packaging, ensuring quality from filling to end-use, though an in-depth evaluation of multilayer structures interactions with food components, as well as with the environment, is crucial for their successful implementation. Moreover, polyolefins are prime candidates for recycling processes, though various technological challenges still need resolution.
This PhD project aims to investigate food-packaging interactions concerning new polyolefin films, which will constitute multilayer structures. The objectives include:
- Understanding the correlation between polyolefin structures, processing conditions, and diffusion properties to gas and water vapor of both monolayer and combined multilayer films.
- Exploring flavour-polymers interactions, particularly sorption and transport (diffusion) of aroma in monolayer and multilayer polyolefin films.
- Investigating the migration behaviour of recycled materials in multilayer structures based on polyolefins.
