Research topic

Development of non-destructive techniques for the analysis of agri-food products: feasibility studies of simplified devices

 

Project Synopsis

Nowadays, a high level of automation in the agri-food industry is required inside the context of industry 4.0. Each product, after a critical processing point, needs a real-time control to ensure the highest quality required by the customers.

Fast and precise analytical methods are essential to ensure product quality, safety, authenticity and compliance with labelling. Traditional methods and tools of food monitoring (e.g. high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry) are time-consuming, expensive and require sample destruction.

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is well established as a non-destructive tool for multi-constituent quality analysis of food materials during the productive process. However, this technique requires good know-how and it provides punctual information about the product.

Therefore, the goal of the project is to elaborate a new kind of customized and simplified instruments, based on NIR techniques, which are easy to use, less expensive and provide the best information required.
